Cats + Medications

  • Fluralaner is used to treat and control flea and tick infestations in dogs and cats. Sometimes fluralaner is used for the treatment of sarcoptic mange or demodectic mange. When fluralaner is prescribed for the treatment of mange, it is referred to as ‘extra-label’ or ‘off label’ use. The majority of pets have very few side effects from fluralaner, provided it is given according to label recommendations and at the prescribed interval. If you suspect an overdose or negative reaction to the medication, call your veterinary office immediately.

  • Flurbiprofen is used to stop inflammation in the eye.

  • Furosemide is a diuretic. It is used to help reduce the amount of water in the pet’s body by increasing the flow of urine. Furosemide is also used to treat high blood pressure and decrease the workload on the heart and arteries.

  • Gabapentin may be useful in the treatment of chronic or cancer pain in cats and dogs. It may also be used as adjunctive therapy for seizures.

  • Gentamicin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. This preparation has been prescribed to treat a bacterial infection of the eye. Common infections treated with this medication are conjunctival infections and infections on the cornea (clear part of eye).

  • Certain medical conditions can be controlled by the use of drugs that are only available in an injectable format. Two of these conditions are diabetes mellitus, which is controlled by daily insulin injections, and certain allergies, which are controlled by regular injections of allergenic extracts.

  • The easiest way to give your cat liquid medication is to mix it in with some canned food. To ensure that your cat swallows all of the medication, it is best to mix it into a small amount of canned food that you feed by hand, rather than mixing it into a full bowl of food that the cat may not completely eat.

  • Giving your cat a pill can be a challenge even for the most experienced veterinarian! The easiest way to give your cat a pill is to hide the pill in food. This usually works best if the pill is hidden in a small amount of tuna, salmon, yogurt or cream cheese.

  • Glipizide is a sulfonylurea anti-diabetic agent used to treat non-insulin dependent diabetes. Glipizide works by causing the pancreas to release more insulin into the bloodstream.

  • Griseofulvin is an antifungal medication. It is usually used to treat ringworm. It also may be used to treat fungal infections of the skin, hair and nails.
